This Week in Review

Just digging out from a pretty frenetic week bouncing from Boston to New York to San Diego to Los Angeles and, finally, back to Boston.

New York was just a quickie, meeting some candidates for new portfolio company World Championship Sports Network, and visiting with a Corp. Dev. exec from a major media company.

Then it was off to San Diego for a relatively short visit to the eTech conference, which I thought had a very strong turnout this year. The highlight, for me, was a great group that Seth Goldstein and Josh Kopelman pulled together for dinner. Lots of smart and interesting folks as well as some entrepreneurs who are launching pretty cool sounding companies. Thanks to Seth and Josh for a terrific evening.

And, I have to confess my amateurish thrill at meeting someone at the dinner who reads my blog. A big thanks to Cliff Boro both for reading this stuff and for making my week!

After eTech it was up to Los Angeles for a quick coffee with my oldest brother Bob, and then meetings with two new companies, both of which actually were quite interesting.

In addition to racking up the frequent flier miles (Mauii, here we come!), I experienced a new first — visiting a company on the west coast, and then taking the red-eye back to Boston with the entrepreneur to introduce him to a few of my partners. I was pretty impressed at the stamina he showed in making two VC pitches on no sleep.

Oh yeah, I should also mention that last week we announced the closing of a new, $1 billion fund, just a couple weeks after our firm’s 10th anniversary.

All in all it was a fun, interesting and productive — although a bit exhausting — week.

They say that Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest, but I think my daughter’s 7 am rink time is going to make that a challenge.
