One of the more interesting questions swirling around the entrepreneurial primordial soup that is Web 2.0 is what will emerge as your start page.
Seems to me that winning this contest will be a big deal.
I don’t think anyone yet knows how this will shake out.
The likely candidates at this point seem to be: your blog authoring tool; your social network; your web calendar/todolist/organizer (I like what 30boxes is doing); your webtop (netvibes, webwag, pageflakes).
Note who is not on the list: Windows/Explorer; Google; MyYahoo. Don’t think this needs explaining.
Who/what else am I missing?

The question for my is how to incorporate my daily routine
rss feeds
emails
voicemail
previous day business metrics
into my blog. Widgets are the answer right now.
BTW- Ckeck-out Jason Kolb’s 6 Part Series “Reinventing the Internet” for a great look at how a distributed social network with folks URIs as nodes might look.

I like Protopage and Pageflakes as my start pages. They are faster on my computer than Webwag and others.
Basecamp, of course!
My start page is http://en.bitacle.org/
What you’re missing is that there are loads of people out there like me who have Google or Yahoo or MSN/Liveas their start page. (Mine is currently Google.) I do have a blog, but no authoring tool. I don’t participate in social networks because I find them creepy and somewhat invasive. I keep my calendar and read mail on my mac with the apple software. And I know of, but have never atually visited, the sites you mentioned and I’m not entirely sure why I’d want to.
And I’m pretty well plugged in to this sort of stuff. My mom? AOL, or whatever came with the computer, despite my best efforts to help.
Perhaps I’m an oddity in that I’m still bound to my desktop, but I prefer it that way. Not that there aren’t good web aps, its just that most could be better if they were a well connected desktop ap.
Hey Damon–
Yeah, you do make a good point.
I’d reframe my question as whether any of the emerging web apps will displace G or Y or M as start page, or whether the big guys will buy up little app co’s, integrate in, and maintain dominance.
Thanks for the reality check!
My protopage is my start page, because it has everything: my email inboxes, all my RSS feeds, bookmarks and notes, and my two most frequently used Web 2.0 sites (Spongecell and Remember the Milk) have their own subpages on my proto.
