Turbine’s “Lord of the Rings Online” Rings the Bell

May 8, 2007

My portfolio company Turbine Entertainment at long last launched its highly anticipated massively multiplayer game Lord of the Rings Online two weeks ago.

The launch buzz was pretty phenomenal. In addition to a bunch of great reviews, articles and blog posts, on the morning of the game’s launch, the CEO of the game’s publisher, Midway, literally rang the NYSE opening bell. Pretty cool.

While Turbine has not disclosed any specific sales figures, the early numbers are putting the LOTRO launch right up there with the most successful game launches ever, although we really won’t know for a few months whether the early subscribers love the game and will stick with it for the long term.

Huge congratulations to the entire Turbine team. Amidst lots of naysaying, these guys remained unphased, focused and did a heroic job getting the game out.

My portfolio company, Turbine Entertainment, will be releasing its much anticipated massively multiplayer game for Lord of the Rings in April.

We had some nice coverage of the game in yesterday’s New York Times.

It’s crunch time over at Turbine — look forward to (hopefully) reporting a gangbuster later this spring…
